NEWS FROM 2008/9

Chair's evening(4th September 2008)

A welcome return for many familar faces and pleasing to see new members for the coming season. The first half was a general review of points raised at the AGM, such as competition scoring, Maeldune Centre Exhibition, and digitally projected image external competitions. This was followed by a slide show of 'Places in England' mainly showing areas around Essex, Suffolk and Sussex.

Committee meeting (7th October 2008)

  • It was agreed to arrange another showing of prints at the Maeldune Centre, in January 2009 hopefully to attract new members. Being the winter months, it is hoped that more local people rather than summer visitors will be viewing the photographs. Posters are to be displayed around Maldon area. It was also suggested that in the display is a larger board prominently displaying the clubs address, etc.
  • Digital Projector - The club's previous efforts to secure funding via the Lottery failed on a minor point. Successful clubs are/were holding classes etc, but the commitee did not want this tie of justifying the funding from the Lottery. Instead, P Watkins is to look into the cost of refurbished Laptops of a decent quality, and other members to find outthe cost and quality after the mini-digi presentations evening equipment is used.
  • For the summer theme 2009 the subject of 'Unloved' was chosen, and the fixed subject for 2010 is to be 'Light and Shade'. Other ideas put were forward was 'Water' and 'Urban living'
  • Although it was initially agreed at the AGM that the slide group would merge into one, it was decided that it should remain with it's existing A and B groups to encourage competition.
  • In AOB ideas were put forward for promoting membership. One suggestion was that if the projector is purchased, this could be used on an Open Evening, for showing how to use software editing programmes. However, the evening will also be open to film workers, or those who are interested in receiving tips on their photographs. The event could be held on a normal club night, but possibly on a Friday as this is a weekend day. A Photo competition was also discussed, and where to hold it, as the club does not hold boards at the Meeting House. Town hall costs and boards to be investigated. If it was held at Hall, the pictures would be displayed on tables. It was thought that prints only in colour/B/W would be appropriate. Entry forms could be printed from the club's website or held at the town hall. The idea of the opening evening and photo competition would require advertising, in the form of posters around Maldon and it's surrounding area and in the local papers. In a previous meeting, suggestions were made that an exhibition or competition could be held a the local horticultural society. This idea is to be investigated further as an alternative to holding our own competition, and the competition wouldpotentially be sponsored by the club.
  • Coach Trips - This was not discussed until Oct 16th Meeting when R Jopson, proposed the idea that members would have to pay the full price, as the outings had been subsidised by club funds and this needed to be reconsidered for the future. This will be mentioned again at a later date.

Lectures

The first lecture of the season was 3D projection using twin projectors and special glasses for the audience to see the effect. Subjects shown were victorian postcard scenes then and now, landscapes and the collection of old planes from Duxfield Museum in Cambridgeshire. Some of the pictures appeared beyond the boundaries of the screen, especially the planes. Thanks to D Weedon for his comments and pictures.

The last twelve months lecture in October presented by S Jenkins, was a slide show, presenting the different subjects he photograph throughout a yearly period, the reasons for taking them, and plans for return visits to places. Many excellent pictures, including landscapes, people and vehicles.

This is the first year for the EAF Annual Exhibition CD, in place of the taped commentary and slides. The evening provided a lively debate about the choice of work chosen and awards presented to entrants for the exhibition.
